Assistant News Director – KGW Portland, OR

KGW in Portland, Oregon is hiring an Assistant News Director to partner with the News Director in managing daily news operations across all platforms. The role requires strong leadership, editorial judgment, and a digital‑savvy approach.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Oversight:
    Manage daily newsroom activities, assign stories, and fill in for the News Director when absent.
  • Editorial Leadership:
    Develop news coverage plans, collaborate with reporters, finalize scripts, and critique newscasts and digital content.
  • Staff Management:
    Hire, train, and mentor a diverse team of reporters and producers, fostering a high‑performing culture.
  • Multi‑Platform Focus:
    Coordinate news coverage across TV, digital, streaming, and social platforms, emphasizing digital growth.
  • Quality & Standards:
    Uphold journalistic ethics, brand standards, and ratings success.
  • Strategic Planning:
    Work with management on content philosophy, marketing, and ratings goals.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in news programming and newsroom leadership.
  • Experience managing a senior team and early‑career staff.
  • Strong decision‑making, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Familiarity with digital news production and multi‑platform content delivery; streaming strategy experience is required.
  • Ability to mentor and motivate a diverse team.
