Department Overview

Doernbecher Childrens Hospital (DCH) PACU is a 26 bed combined Preprocedure/PACU. DCH PACU has 40 direct reports both RNs and CNAs. DCH Perioperative services has 10 Surgical/Procedural rooms and cares for about 7 500 patients a year. Pediatric sedation is a 6 bed sedation unit that covers sedations across the Marquam Hill campus. Sedatoin has 22 direct reports that all RNs. DCH has ASC Level 1 Certifications in both Pediatric Trauma and Children’s Surgical Verification.

Function/Duties

of Position

The Nurse Manager (NM) is a Registered Nurse (RN) who is responsible for operational, human resources, quality, and financial management of the assigned inpatient unit. The NM works with the interdisciplinary team to translate and implement organizational and division priorities into the unit's operations. The NM ensures a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff.

The NM partners with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure the delivery of safe, quality patient care and compliance with administrative, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. The NM implements quality and safety initiatives, leads process improvement, ensures adherence to hospital and clinical standards of performance, and human resource management. The NM ensures adherence to regulatory standards, bargaining unit agreements, hospital and clinical standards of performance, and human resource management.

The NM creates and sustains a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff.

The NM's decisions and actions are based on the ethical principles outlined by the American Nurses Association's Code of Ethics for Nursing. The NM practices in adherence with the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Nursing Administration:
Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrators, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing, the Oregon State Board of Nursing's Nurse Practice Act, and within the context of the Nurse Executive Competencies developed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). The NM exemplifies the principles of the OHSU Culture of Safety Position Statement by committing to a Just Culture, a Reporting Culture, a Learning Culture, and an Engaged Informed Culture.

  • Requires prioritization of multiple projects, activities, and assignments.
  • Frequent interruptions in an environment of frequent change and fluctuations.
  • May be exposed to excessive auditory and visual stimulation.
  • For inpatient units: accepts 24/7 accountability and responsibility to include possibility of stepping into patient care or clerical role, as needed. For outpatient or special service-type units: accountability and responsibility for overall program during hours of operation and overall program coordination, including stepping into a clinical or clerical role as needed.
  • May be required to attend out of town conferences according to hospital travel and reimbursement policies.
  • Subject to computer work for several as needed.
  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers including ensuring safe conditions for patients, families and staff.
  • Exercises the ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the unit needs and to create a work-life balance.
Required Qualifications
  • BSN or higher degree in nursing.
  • Master's degree in nursing or related field, or in process.
  • Five years of experience as a registered nurse in a related specialty.
  • Two years recent related management/leadership experience.
  • Professional certification in nursing leadership—Nurse Executive/Administrator within 3 years of assuming the manager role.
