This position involves overseeing and managing various aspects of a 65-90 head alpaca farm. The farm includes 2 barns, multiple shelters, 10 acres of irrigated pastures, fences, farm roads, irrigation systems, and more. The owners live on-site and are actively involved in farm operations. Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required.
Responsibilities:- Management of farm staff, including hiring, firing, and training with input from owners
- Collaborate with the Head Gardener and garden team, sharing equipment and assisting as needed
- Supervise alpaca health, birthing, training, assist in sales, and attend shows when required
- Manage large-scale farm compost operations
- Oversee pasture health through fertilizing, liming, replanting, and mole eradication
- Operate and maintain tractors, mowers, chainsaws, power tools, and hand tools
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on farm systems such as electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and irrigation; coordinate repairs with specialists when necessary
- Maintain farm infrastructure including roads, fences, gutters, and structures through tasks like firewood handling and pressure washing
- Transport alpacas using truck and trailer to shows or veterinary appointments
- Be available for troubleshooting unforeseen issues on the farm
- Proficiency in computer skills, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel, is desirable
- Work effectively with staff and customers, organizing and communicating tasks clearly
- Keep detailed records of farm activities and needs
- Perform outdoor work in all weather conditions, including lifting hay bales, feed, and fertilizer bags
- Willing to work longer hours and weekends when required
- Reliable transportation is necessary
- Livestock experience, preferably with camelids
- Experience showing animals is a plus
- Good handyman skills
- Animal science degree preferred
- Management experience, ideally in farm or ranch management
This position requires living near the farm. Compensation is salary-based, depending on experience and skills. After 6 months, benefits include:
- 6 paid holidays
- 2 weeks paid vacation annually
- 1 week sick pay annually
- $100 medical bonus per month
