Emergency Experienced Veterinary Assistant

Pay Range: $23.69/hr - $30.25/hr this range is based on experience and skills.

Position Overview

The veterinary assistant provides day‑to‑day support to veterinarians and technicians, handling patient care, equipment maintenance, administrative duties, and ensuring high standards of hygiene and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide compassionate care to all patients.
  • Greet patients and owners, take weight and vital signs, and perform triage.
  • Assist in physical exams, treatments, and medication administration under LVT supervision.
  • Calm and soothe anxious patients.
  • Assist with patient restraint and medication administration.
  • Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs.
  • Operate and maintain hospital equipment including EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, and other machines.
  • Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer controlled drugs with proper documentation.
  • Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, and report abnormal behaviors.
  • Communicate positively with clients and ensure they feel comfortable.
  • Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and therapeutic plans.
  • Maintain hospital cleanliness, clean equipment, kennels, and facilities, and complete laundry.
  • Bath and care for overnight patients, ensuring they are groomed before release.
  • Adhere to safety and wellness regulations.
  • Follow oral and written directions and maintain accurate medical records.
  • Show up for work regularly; full‑time presence is essential for every shift.
  • Promote hospital products and services and support the organization.
  • Respond respectfully with urgency to instructions from DVM or LVT.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager; may include specialty areas such as dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, or internal medicine.
Qualifications (Required)
  • At least 1 year of experience in ER/Specialty medicine within the past 5 years.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of veterinary environment experience, successfully performing the duties outlined.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
  • More than 1 year of ER/Specialty experience.
  • Demonstrated care and compassion, building rapport with patients and owners.
  • Strong animal restraint and safety judgment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Team orientation and cooperative spirit.
  • Dependability and responsibility in task completion.
  • Adherence to cleanliness standards.

Schedule
  • 3 x 12‑hour shifts; focus on swings and overnights with rotating weekends.
  • Weekly schedule remains consistent (e.g., all overnights for the week, all swings, etc.).
