Job Summary
The Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory Teaching Assistant (TA) will report to the instructor of the course — CHM 374:
Inorganic Chemistry I Laboratory. The assigned classroom for the course will be located in Swindells Hall. The approximate hours for a semester will be 3 hours per week (~39 hours each semester). Beyond these basic hours, the TA may also be asked to prep chemicals or supplies for the laboratory course if the TA is available. The course instructor will inform the TA of performance deficiencies (if any) and where they are performing well on an on-going basis.
A TA who is not meeting the communicated expectations may be dismissed and replaced with another qualified applicant at any time during the semester for which they are hired. This position begins the first week of the spring semester.
Core Duties
- Assist the instructor in helping students conduct experiments safely.
- Answer student questions related to experimental procedure and calculations.
- Answer student questions related to underlying chemistry concepts.
- Be in the lab and actively helping students during assigned lab times.
- Assist the instructor in setting up for and cleaning up after experiments, including setting out chemical reagents and equipment prior to lab, returning reagents and equipment to the appropriate places after lab, capping and storing waste bottles, and general cleaning of the lab.
- Potential to prep chemicals or supplies for the laboratory course if the TA is available.
- Other relevant tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Successful completion of CHM 374 with a grade of B or higher.
- Good technical and people skills.
- The ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of safe laboratory practices.
- Knowledge of underlying chemistry concepts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous TA experience.
- Anticipated successful completion of CHM 473.
- Student with Green Dot Certification preferred.
