Our programs are Trauma-Informed, Data-Driven, and Person-Centered.
We take the time to learn each individual's story and help connect them to the appropriate local resources and services to meet their unique needs. We do not duplicate available services; instead, we build strong collaborative partnerships with local programs and foster connections between participants and our community partners.
Position SummaryThe Safety (Security) Specialist ensures the safety and security of residents, staff, and visitors to the facility while fostering a supportive, person-centered and trauma-informed environment. This role involves monitoring the premises, responding to various safety incidents, and assisting with emergency preparedness and daily safety operations.
- 1+ years of experience in safety/security, preferably in a human/social services environment
- Full-time, schedule varies, 24/7/365 environment
- Monitor entrances, exits, shared spaces and camera views to ensure the safety of all individuals on site.
- De-escalate conflicts using nonviolent, professional communication and trauma-informed techniques.
- Conduct hourly walkthroughs and safety checks of indoor and outdoor spaces as per Basic Post Orders.
- Report incidents clearly and accurately, escalating to supervisors and management as needed.
- Support residents during safety-related incidents, ensuring dignity and respect.
- Provide crisis response support in collaboration with program staff and emergency services.
- Identify and report safety hazards or maintenance concerns.
- Engage positively with residents, offering a reassuring presence without intimidation.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation and reporting.
Skills and Qualifications
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Suite
- Excellent documentation and reporting skills
- Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, making sound decisions in emergencies
- Excellent communication and observational skills
- A professional and compassionate disposition along with excellent customer service skills
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts as needed
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain within 60 days of hire)
- Understanding of trauma-informed, person-centered and harm-reduction approaches
- Understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness, chemical dependency, domestic violence, and sexual assault
- Lived experience with homelessness, DV, and/or addiction
- Bilingual/bicultural skills highly desired
- Hearing and vision adequate for interaction with participants, staff, and the general public
- Work both indoors and outdoors (including exposure to inclement weather conditions), accompanied by moderate noise levels and exposure to scents
- Occasionally operates a computer and/or other office productivity equipment, such as copy machine, printer, and phone
- Frequently required to move about within the facility and remain on feet for extended periods: stand/walking (up to 5-10 miles per day), lift/ up to 50 pounds
