PROGRAM(S): PDX Youth@Work / Summer Works (Youth Coaching)

SECTOR: Workforce Development

Position Summary

The Career Coach reports directly to the Program Coordinator (PC) or Sector Manager and supports Youth Coaching programs in Multnomah and Washington counties. Career Coaches will provide workforce development services to low-income youth who face barriers to employment. They will assist in on‑boarding youth, work with Worksite Liaisons for placement and troubleshooting, engage in one‑on‑one coaching, deliver work readiness training, administer support services, and conduct intern exit interviews.

Essential

Functions
  • Conduct youth orientations and manage essential forms and paperwork.
  • Build relationships with assigned youth and partner agencies.
  • Work closely with Worksite Liaisons to place youth, address concerns, and offer support to ensure successful experiences.
  • Provide support services such as clothing and transportation to meet position requirements.
  • Lead work readiness workshops to develop soft skills.
  • Maintain communication with Service Coordination contractors or partner agencies.
  • Track and report data as required.
  • Maintain files for each youth on the caseload.
  • Report regularly to the Project Coordinator and attend weekly program meetings.
  • Engage actively with 50‑80 youth at one time.
  • Drive/travel within the Portland Metro area when necessary to meet participants at remote sites.
Secondary Functions
  • Function in a positive manner in a demanding work environment.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to respond to priorities and schedules that may change rapidly.
  • Meet multiple, sometimes conflicting deadlines and commitments.
  • Utilize a personal computer, read, and analyze data.
  • Have experience working directly with people from multi‑background communities and various income and opportunity statuses.
  • Treat all youth and supervisors with respect and equity, and advocate for program participants when necessary.
  • Work with distressed or concerned youth, parents, and others effectively.
  • Organize files and records systematically, maintaining high confidentiality.
  • Listen for understanding and foster a problem‑solving approach.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of personality types and professional backgrounds.
  • Work flexible hours to meet the needs of youth and maintain professional punctuality.
Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and verification of current auto‑insurance.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history background check.
Education & Experience Minimum Job Specific Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working with youth.
  • A combination of any of the following:
    • Knowledge and/or experience in job development and placement activities.
    • Knowledge and/or experience in vocational and/or placement counseling for youth.
    • Knowledge of the local job market and concerns of employers.
    • Knowledge and/or experience with teaching or group facilitation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong skills in community, interpersonal, and organizational communication.
  • Communicate effectively in a positive manner verbally, in writing, and by phone.
  • Strong communication skills in a multilingual, multi‑background, team and organization.
