Job Purpose

The Lead Milieu Counselor (LMC) provides leadership and training to Milieu Counselor staff, supervises youth in care, and supports the Milieu Supervisor and other management staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide support and serve as a role model for Milieu Counselor staff regarding program policies and youth interactions.
  • Act as the main point of contact when the Milieu Supervisor is not on shift.
  • Plan and coordinate client activities, staff coverage, and supplies.
  • Collaborate with Milieu Supervisors to address and resolve milieu‑related issues.
  • Carry out the duties of a Milieu Counselor (see Milieu Counselor job description).
  • Work effectively with outside providers to coordinate client services.
  • Track individual behavior plan progress.
  • Attend all meetings designated by the supervisor.
  • Participate in ongoing program planning and review processes.
  • Commit to learning and implementing the Sanctuary Model and agency policies.
  • Participate in staff development, in‑services, and training related to workplace effectiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Core Competencies
  • Lead a group of staff and clients.
  • Maintain composure and professional boundaries in chaotic situations; de‑escalate volatile situations.
  • Keep accurate records and maintain confidentiality.
  • Follow oral and written directives.
  • Work any shift on any of the seven days of the week, including early morning, swing, or both.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Understand program policy, procedures, and safety in a residential setting.
Required Position Qualifications
  • Bi‑lingual in Spanish and English (written, read, verbal).
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 1 year of employment experience in the child welfare field working with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting.
  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and Outlook.
Preferred Position Qualifications
  • One year of experience supervising staff.
  • Residential experience.
  • Knowledge of adolescent developmental issues, trauma, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, delinquency, peer influence, and related group and individual interventions.
Other Requirements
  • Pass a criminal history background check and suitability determination through the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
  • Meet agency driving requirements: a valid driver’s license for OR or WA, personal auto liability insurance, and a driving record allowing coverage under the corporate auto liability policy.
  • Proof of vaccination (MMR, Varicella, DTaP & Influenza annually).
  • Bloodborne pathogen training within the first day of employment.
  • Travel between program locations.
  • CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire and current at all times.
  • All other applicable trainings as required with necessary updates and reoccurrences.
Working Conditions

Work occurs in clinical offices, community settings, residential buildings, administrative buildings, public locations, and social service sites. Universal precautions, alertness to violence, disease exposure, biohazards, noise, and contaminants are critical. Flexibility in time management is required, and physical interventions may be necessary.
