Job Summary

The Skills Trainer is responsible for providing behavioral and vocational support and training to identified unaccompanied minors in the program.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervises clients and provides skill building activities in a residential setting for unaccompanied minors that may include classroom settings, recreational outings, educational and community activities as well as activities in the foster home.
  • Provides a safe environment for the clients, including therapeutically interacting with clients and setting clear expectations for appropriate behaviors.
  • Provides on‑going behavioral skill building for identified minors according to their treatment plan or behavioral plan.
  • Strengthens vocational training program for youth preparing to age out or transfer to lesser‑restrictive setting.
  • Monitors clients when in the community to assure for safety and compliance with tasks.
  • Consults with treatment team including program clinicians, program directors, case managers, milieu staff and supervisors to develop treatment and behavioral plans and courses of action.
  • Consults with service providers when appropriate to insure that comprehensive services are being coordinated effectively, including attending weekly team meetings and treatment team meetings as necessary.
  • Facilitates community and vocational educational groups with minors.
  • Prepares notes, communication and incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Adheres to federal, program, agency and contract quality assurance standards.
  • Completes timesheet and other personnel administrative records as required.
  • Ability to work evenings/weeksends if needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Remains calm and emotionally available in an environment serving youth who have experienced trauma.
  • Provides visual and auditory supervision of youth.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion when working and interacting with others.
  • Ability to regularly attend scheduled shifts, be punctual for scheduled shifts and meetings, and be in a condition suitable for assuming responsibilities of position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor, Program Director and Division Director.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to developing a thorough knowledge and application of the Sanctuary model and other organizational policies & practices.
  • Participate in staff development, in‑services, and training related to workplace effectiveness; model professional behaviors and implement improvements to business practices with awareness of their impact in a trauma‑informed behavioral health organization.

Required Position Qualifications
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, written, read and verbal. Must clear a language proficiency test for Spanish.
  • Minimum 1 year employment experience in the child welfare field working with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting.
  • Intermediate computer skills.
Preferred Position Qualifications
  • 4‑year college degree in social services or a related field required strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with adolescents in a school, behavioral or mental health setting is preferred.
  • Prior experience with developing vocational training programs.
  • Advanced training in trauma responses, including depression, anxiety and maladaptive behaviors preferred.
