Overview
Are you an experienced UX Engineer or Frontend Engineer looking to make a big impact at a mission-driven company? Propel is on a mission to build modern, respectful, and effective technology that helps low-income Americans improve their financial health. We’re a team of 100 Propellers working toward a vision where all Americans can make it through every month with dignity and abundance.
We’re looking for a motivated UX Engineer or Frontend Engineer to join our engineering team at Propel with opportunities to flex between individual contributor and leadership roles.
This role will impact multiple products and stacks, including interactions with government programs, surfacing savings opportunities, healthcare, and frontend architecture. We are seeking a passionate, user-centric engineer excited about meaningful problems and delivering beautiful, impactful solutions for our users.
Responsibilities- Be a strategic leader in identifying the best technical and product opportunities. Lead from the front on building new product initiatives or driving refactors of legacy frontend systems, influence technical and product direction, and be prepared to lead a team as needed while balancing IC work and leadership responsibilities.
- Up-level and set the bar for engineering by modeling best practices in technical decisions, code hygiene, documentation, and shipping high-quality products on schedule.
- Dive deep into high-complexity product work, delivering polished, scalable solutions with autonomy and strong support from the team.
- 10+ years of experience designing, building, shipping, and maintaining software at scale
- 3+ years of experience leading and managing a team
- Expertise in at least one frontend language with willingness to learn Type Script and Vue
- Experience in a startup environment with the ability to operate effectively under ambiguity
- Ability to ramp up quickly to Propel’s product ecosystem to contribute to large, impactful projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong collaboration with designers and product managers
- Ability to provide constructive feedback in technical specs, code reviews, and team discussions
- Passion for making a difference in users’ lives
- Track record of identifying the right problems, driving change, and keeping stakeholders informed
- Experience building consumer-facing products for large user bases
- Flexibility to operate as an individual contributor or as a manager of a small team
- Knowledge and passion for accessibility-focused product development
- Curiosity about new technologies and novel problems
- Experience building scalable frontend architectures with developer usability in mind
- Judgment balancing speed of shipping with robustness and scalability
- Ability to communicate across all levels of seniority and prioritize long-term and short-term needs
- Willingness to participate in strategic technical and product roadmap planning
- Mentoring and up-leveling other engineers

- Compensation bands referenced to the 75th percentile for comparable companies; expected compensation for this role is 220K–240K, based on leveling and experience
