Position: Bus Driver in Training 2025-2026
Overview

Bus Driver in Training, 2025 - 2026 School Year
. This position is for the Route Drivers Substitute Pool, Bus Drivers in Training and Trip Drivers for the District with varying shifts for the  school year. Applications will be screened, and if selected, applicants will be notified as to next steps by the District Recruiter.

Responsibilities
  • Learn to safely operate all school buses under various weather conditions and transport students and other authorized persons on regular routes, field trips, co-curricular activities, and special or extra activity trips as approved by the district.
  • Interact in a positive, professional manner with students, parents, the public, and school authorities; maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA.
  • Prepare reports and observe rules and regulations governing the performance of duties.
  • Learn to operate school bus equipment and accessories, including adaptive equipment for students with special needs (e.g., wheelchair lifts) and ensure such equipment is in safe working order.
  • Adhere to Oregon Department of Education (ODE) requirements for transporting students with special needs; participate in trainings related to special needs transportation.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and ensure buses are clean and maintained per district standards.
  • Maintain student safety and behavior according to district policies; report unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Complete state and district training programs as required, and maintain required forms, records, timesheets, and other documentation.
  • Operate all hand and foot controls in accordance with state and district standards; respond to emergencies, provide first aid when needed, document accidents, and safeguard other vehicles.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and district policies for school bus operation and safety inspections of buses and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to establish and maintain effective relations with patrons and staff.
  • Effective oral and written communication; analytical ability; proficiency with office technology and software.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively; ability to organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow maps and directions.
  • Be eligible to obtain a Commercial Driver's License and have a safe driving record.
  • This position is subject to random DOT drug testing and compliance with District anti-drug and alcohol prevention programs.
  • Be eligible to obtain a school bus driver’s certification and any required licensing endorsements.
  • Ability to complete first aid certification and to provide emergency first aid as needed.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Hourly rates  School Year):
    Substitutes for Route Driver in Training (C2) - $19.55 per hour;
    Non-experienced applicants start at C2 $ 19.55/hour and advance to E2 $ 24.13/hour after training (drivers with relatable experience or eligible credentials may start at E2 $ 24.13/hour).
  • Retirement Plan Contributions:
    The district participates in the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP); employer contributions apply; employee portion is 6% via payroll deduction after six full calendar months in a qualifying position (part-time employees with at least six months and 600 hours per calendar year will qualify).
