Job description

PLEASE NOTE:
This vacancy is open to School of Criminology and Criminal Justice employees only.
The University of Portsmouth is a global employer of choice where exceptional people create, share and apply knowledge that makes a difference. Experience the pride of being part of a select group – one of only four universities in the south-east of England to achieve a prestigious Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Additionally, we proudly rank among the top 140 universities globally in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings. Ambition, Responsibility and Openness drive our every endeavour. Join our esteemed institution with a proven track record of success, and where dedication to excellence is key. We want people to make their mark in a professional community that truly values people, innovation, and achievement.

The Role:

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is the largest criminology department in the UK with an established presence in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education, complemented by a successful applied criminology research profile. The University has secured TEF Gold status and is aiming to be the top modern University. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice will make a significant contribution towards achieving this aim.

The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is seeking to appoint a Programme Area Leader
- Professional Policing to provide strategic leadership and day-to-day operational management of our Professional Policing programme area. The successful candidate will lead the continued development, delivery and expansion of Professional Policing provision, including the BSc (Hons) Professional Policing Practice (Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship). Working closely with the Director of Innovation, they will provide leadership to colleagues, help shape and achieve strategic priorities, ensure the effective delivery and resourcing of programmes, and support the continued growth and development of the programme area.

The role will represent the Department and University within the Police Education Consortium, working collaboratively with our police force partners. This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in a significant area of the School's professional education portfolio and contribute to the education and development of the next generation of police officers. As an equal opportunities' employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons, and all appointments will be made on merit.

As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this level in this area. Whilst there is a need to be in Portsmouth a few days a week, hybrid working is available for this role. The interviews are currently anticipated to be held on 22 September 2026.

This appointment is offered on a fixed-term contract until 30 September 2029. If you have any queries regarding this position, please contact Dr Nicholas Pamment, Director of Innovation, at  Employer, External Only:
