An established engineering company is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join its team in Portsmouth. Role Overview
The Senior Design Engineer will take ownership of design activities across a range of projects, ensuring solutions meet technical, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The role involves participation in design reviews, close collaboration with cross-functional teams, and providing mentorship to junior engineers. You’ll help ensure that all outputs are robust, manufacturable, and aligned with customer and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead design and development work from initial concept through to production and post-production support.
* Ensure compliance with contractual, regulatory, and quality standards.
* Produce and maintain drawings, specifications, and documentation in line with relevant standards (e.g., BS8888, DEF STAN 05-10).
* Review and sign off engineering documentation as part of the design approval process.
* Participate in and contribute to design reviews.
* Work collaboratively with analysis, manufacturing, integration, safety, and trials teams.
* Support the preparation of technical publications and deliverable documents.
* Mentor and guide junior engineers to support their development.
* Process engineering change requests and concessions in line with internal procedures.
* Contribute to continuous improvement and optimisation of design processes.
What We’re Looking For
* Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a similar engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
* Proven design engineering experience within a regulated sector (aerospace, defence, medical devices, etc.).
* Strong CAD capability (Solid Works preferred but not essential).
* Excellent problem-solving skills and strong communication abilities.
* A motivated, conscientious individual with leadership potential.
