Position: Engineering Technician (mechanical)

Overview

You will serve as an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (MECHANICAL) in the Temporary Services / Steam Plant Cleanliness Branch (Code 269), Fluid/Mechanical Engineering and Planning Division (Code 260), Office of Chief Engineer (Code 240), Engineering and Planning Department (Code 200) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities
  • Design, specify, and install temporary service systems (including high-pressure air, breathing air, temporary cooling water manifolds, and steam lines) to support nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers during shipyard availabilities and drydock periods.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and utility system failures on the waterfront; evaluate operational data to recommend and implement engineering solutions that comply with NAVSEA and SUBSAFE safety parameters.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with production shops (e.g., Shipfitters, Pipe fitters, Machinists) and related engineering disciplines (structural and electrical) to integrate temporary ship-to-shore utility hookups safely and efficiently.
  • Research and procure specialized mechanical components and Level I/SUBSAFE materials using DoD material databases (such as MAT, One Touch, and WebFLIS), ensuring compliance with military ordering codes and quality assurance requirements.
  • Evaluate and apply the latest technological developments, testing methods, and engineering precedents to modernize waterfront utility distribution, mitigate operational risks, and reduce cost and lead times.
Qualifications
  • At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate: designing, specifying, and installing temporary service systems; troubleshooting complex mechanical and utility systems and recommending engineering solutions; coordinating with production shops and related disciplines; researching and procuring appropriate materials;

    and applying advanced engineering practices to waterfront utilities.
  • Experience and knowledge described includes: high-pressure air, breathing air, temporary cooling water manifolds, steam lines, NAVSEA and SUBSAFE safety parameters, and DoD databases (e.g., MAT, One Touch, WebFLIS).
