NEW ROLE - (Mid Weight):
Low Power Communications and Mesh Networking
We are looking for a mid-weight RF Engineer to join our growing engineering team in Gloucestershire. You will help design, test and improve the low-power radio links and mesh networks that carry live data from sensors back to the user, often across long distances, multiple hops and tough field conditions. This is a hands‑on role in a fast-paced scale‑up, working on defence and space projects with real users and real deadlines.
What you will do- Design, develop and optimise low-power RF hardware and radio links for small, battery‑powered sensor nodes.
- Develop and improve our mesh networking, including routing, multi‑hop performance, atency and resilience.
- Carry out link budget analysis and range planning, and help choose antennas, bands and radio modules.
- Support RF front‑end and antenna design, PCB layout reviews, and matching and tuning on the bench.
- Test and characterise radio performance in the lab and in the field, using spectrum analysers, VNAs and signal generators.
- Work closely with the embedded, hardware and AI teams to balance range, data rate and power use within tight size, weight and power limits.
- Support field trials and customer demonstrations, including deploying units and diagnosing link issues on site.
- Write clear test reports and technical documentation, and support EMC and regulatory compliance work.
- A degree in electronic engineering, physics or a related subject, or equivalent experience.
- Solid commercial experience in RF or wireless engineering, working at mid level.
- Strong understanding of low‑power radio design and wireless protocols such as BLE, IEEE 802.15.4, Thread, Zigbee, LoRa or proprietary sub‑GHz systems.
- Practical experience with mesh networking, including topology, routing and multi‑hop behaviour.
- Confident with RF test equipment and bench debugging.
- Good knowledge of antenna fundamentals, impedance matching and link budgets.
- Able to work independently and as part of a small, close team.
- Happy to travel occasional for field trials and demonstrations.
- Experience with Nordic or similar low‑power wireless SoCs.
- Embedded firmware experience in C or C++ for radio stacks.
- RF simulation tools and PCB design tools.
- Experience in defence, security or space projects.
- Experience designing for harsh or remote outdoor environments.
Because of the nature of our work, the successful candidate must complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks before starting. They must also be eligible for and willing to undergo UK Security Check (SC) clearance. SC clearance normally requires at least five years’residency in the UK. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
What we offer- The chance to work on cutting‑edge sensing and communications technology used by the MOD, ESA and NATO partners.
- A modern office with R&D labs, and real influence over products at an early stage in our growth.
