Job Description

POSITION TITLE: VPI INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT/CHURCHLAND PRESCHOOL

REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL

OVER TIME STATUS: NON EXEMPT PAY: 105C

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual students or small groups; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the classroom teacher.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects;

work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;

the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and noise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Assisting the classroom teacher with instructional activities; assisting students to reinforce material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; preparing and maintaining files and reports.
  • Assists classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks;
  • Maintains various records and files, keeps confidential files, test scores and related records;
  • Works with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by teacher;
  • Prepares various reports, sets up counseling sessions, conducts orientation sessions;
  • Verifies student records and grades for scholarships and awards; prepares honor roll;
  • Assists with large group activities;
  • Guides independent study and other work assigned by teacher;
  • Advises teacher on student problems;
  • Serves as in-school suspension monitor;
  • Sells supplies, collects and accounts for monies received;
  • Performs cafeteria, hall and bus duties;
  • Assists with lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing and wash-up routines;
  • Participates in in-service training programs as assigned;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

All paraprofessionals must be highly qualified as stated by the No Child Left Behind Act. Applicants must possess an associates of arts degree or complete 48 credit hours (two years) of classes at an accredited college or university, or successfully pass the Para Pro exam (score of at least 455).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
