Respiratory Therapist – Maryview Medical Center – PRN
Location:
Portsmouth, Virginia (Maryview Medical Center).
Schedule:
Two 12‑hour weekday shifts and one 12‑hour weekend shift every six weeks, including one holiday per year.
Hours:
6:30 PM – 7 AM.
Summary of Primary Function
The Respiratory Care Practitioner provides respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Performs all respiratory care procedures within scope of license, monitors patient response to therapies and modifies treatment plans accordingly.
Essential Job Functions- Conducts initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyzes assessment data, creates and implements treatment plans, and evaluates treatment effectiveness in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.
- Performs treatments and therapies per physician orders, explains therapy goals, adjusts procedures based on patient response, sets up and maintains various therapy modes.
- Maintains proper documentation, medical charting, record‑keeping, and follows established policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Provides patient education on cardiopulmonary diseases/disorders and treatment options; instructs patients and caregivers in use of incentive spirometer, MDI, oxygen therapy, home aerosol therapy, or ventilator care as applicable.
- Sets up and maintains respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.
- May serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
- Responds to cardiopulmonary resuscitations and actively participates as required by clinical circumstances.
- Current Respiratory Care License in the state of employment (required).
- National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential (required).
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – preferred.
- BLS Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (required).
- ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support by American Heart Association or Red Cross – preferred.
- PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support by American Heart Association – preferred.
- Valid driver’s license (required for Home Care/DME).
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field – preferred.
- Previous working experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting – preferred.
- At least 6 months Respiratory Therapy experience in a general care area – preferred.
EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training – preferred.
