Position: Nurse (PACU)

About the Position: This position falls under Defense Health Agency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Directorate of Surgery and requires one or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes providing comprehensive nursing care to intraoperative patients, assessing pre-operative or post-operative patients, and educating patients or staff.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties
  • Provide comprehensive preoperative education and coordinate preoperative arrival time utilizing the operative schedule.
  • Utilize the nursing process and advanced assessment skills to identify difficult patient care problems, actual or potential, to formulate complex plans.
  • Maintain accurate, current and complete administrative/nursing records.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, other nurses, and ancillary personnel to meet patient care needs.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to other professional nurses.
  • Coordinate total patient care activities and multidisciplinary involvement by other intra- and inter-departmental services.
  • Function as primary patient contact representative to resolve complaints/conflicts regarding nursing related issues, working relationships or unit conditions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, orderly, and therapeutic working environment.
  • Participate in multifaceted staff development activities at the unit and Command levels.
Requirements
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain an active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds may be required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
