Summary

The Early Childhood and Development Coach works in tandem with the Manager, Education and Inclusion to provide early childhood technical assistance, management, oversight, and support to Head Start and/or Early Head Start programs. The role ensures effective coordination, implementation, and monitoring of education services, incorporating research‑based curriculum and recognized best practices in Early Childhood and Special Education.

Key responsibilities include training and technical assistance to classroom staff, monitoring child and teacher progress, and ensuring compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards. As a front‑line representative of Save the Children, the coach is also responsible for safety and child safeguarding, preventing abuse, and reporting incidents.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
  • Work closely with the Manager, Education and Inclusion and Program Director to assess education staff, identify strengths and needs, and determine who requires intensive coaching.
  • Align teacher practices and program performance goals with school readiness objectives, curricula, and professional development approaches.
  • Execute intensive coaching, including classroom observations, feedback, and modeling of effective teaching practices related to program goals.
  • Provide research‑based professional development for staff who do not need intensive coaching, aligned with program performance goals.
  • Develop policies ensuring assessment results are not used solely for punitive actions and provide resources for staff improvement.
  • Maintain ongoing communication among the Program Director, Manager, Education & Inclusion, and relevant staff.
  • Ensure classrooms are equipped with necessary supplies and activities that are age‑ and developmentally appropriate.
  • Attend home visits, parent conferences, and IEP or IFSP meetings when requested or needed.
  • Visit classrooms regularly (4‑6 hours per month per site) to conduct observations (including CLASS), training, technical assistance, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Build capacity by working directly with Head Start/Early Head Start staff, parents, and community partners to ensure high‑quality programs.
  • Incorporate the Program for Infant Toddler Caregivers (PITC) into curriculum and activities; support families of young English‑language learners.
  • Oversee site tracking of child screenings, assessments, data collection, and participate in local evaluation activities.
  • Provide ongoing training on policies, procedures, program requirements, communication, and problem‑solving skills to staff.
  • Maintain constant alertness, supervise children actively, and ensure no child is left unsupervised.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned or needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with coursework in early childhood education; at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with infants, toddlers, and/or preschool‑aged children.
  • Experience in supervision, training, and developing stable, supportive relationships with young children.
  • Experience using assessment data to drive coaching strategies aligned with program goals.
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices, child safeguarding, and communication with infants, toddlers, parents, and staff.
  • Knowledge of Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Experience with program planning and supervisory techniques.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with teams at all levels.
  • Organizational and problem‑solving skills, time management.
  • Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages used by children and families).
  • For North Carolina applicants, a Birth‑Kindergarten (B‑K) Licensure.
Additional Qualifications
  • Physical requirements:
