Shadow Program - Summer

Program Overview

SK&A is seeking personable, team-focused, highly motivated and results-oriented individuals interested in a one or two week shadow program to learn more about aspects of Structural Design and/or Repair and Restoration. This opportunity is for individuals who might not have the time or education to complete a full summer internship but are still interested in getting a taste of life as a Structural Engineer.

• Shadow current engineers in design of concrete and steel structural systems for commercial, institutional and multi-family residential buildings.
• Prepare design calculations, specifications and analysis of new structures.
• Develop structural plans, details and sections for construction drawings using Revit, Ram Concept, AutoCAD and other structural engineering software.
• Perform construction-related services including shop drawing reviews, RFI response, periodic site observation and occasional specialized structural inspections.
• Interact with outside architectural teams to discuss any design and construction issues.
• Conduct on-site inspections and evaluations of current structural systems, including concrete testing, visual condition survey, structural analyses and writing field reports with recommendations on repair practices and cost analysis.
• Maintain quality assurance during construction including sound concrete and repair area preparation.
• Travel to job sites 50–70% of the time and be available for night and weekend work as necessary.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to build rapport with clients, co‑workers, and subcontractors.
• Good understanding of the architectural design process.
• Background in structural engineering or related field preferred.
