Who We Are Looking For
MCDOT seeks a candidate for the Transportation Systems Technician I/II (Overhead) position in the Transportation Management Section within the Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations. The person is a detail-oriented problem-solver who can create innovative solutions. Good interpersonal and communication and basic computer skills are desired. The person in this position will prioritize, organize, and multitask to meet deadlines and simultaneously follow through with multiple projects.
The selected candidate must be able to work independently, as part of a team, or in group settings to meet established goals. Speaking clearly and distinctively with a diverse population and over a two-way radio is essential. Basic electrical or electronic foundation or construction techniques are essential for learning about traffic signal technologies.
The candidate must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and standby. The ideal candidate MUST have a valid Commercial Driver’s License. Bucket truck experience is desirable.
Experience in one or more of the following relevant knowledge and ability areas is desirable:
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
- Bucket truck experience.
- Basic electrical foundation or construction techniques.
Strict observance of safety precautions and procedures is required since much of the work involves working with and around electrical voltage and high-powered equipment and/or working from extended heights. Employees in this class must possess good strength and agility in order to repeatedly lift objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and to be able to occasionally maneuver objects up to one hundred (100) pounds.
What You ll Be Doing
The person in this position will perform various in the field at traffic signals constructing, modifying, installing, and maintaining transportation systems equipment. The position's primary duties involve working from a bucket truck and are of a physical nature.
Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Installing overhead traffic signal heads, signs, and electrical cables.
- Determine causes of and repair problems with overhead equipment.
- Install and troubleshoot overhead communication cables.
- Re-lamp traffic signal heads.
- Replace damaged pedestrian pedestals and other equipment.
- Install video and other detector technologies overhead at traffic signals.
- Work on 12 to 120-volt AC circuits and 24-volt DC/logic circuits.
- Set up work zone safety traffic control standards inside a construction area or incident sites.
- Set up and program variable message signs.
- Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, near electricity, construction, incident sites, and under stress while working on traffic signal equipment.
Work within rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, standby, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Systems Technician I - Overhead Construction
Experience:
One (1) year of experience involving electrical wiring and intersection set up of traffic signal control devices and related equipment.
Education:
