Job Title
Manufacturing Engineer – Scientific Research & Innovation
LocationSouth Mimms, Hertfordshire (Full‑time, Permanent)
About the RoleThe post holder will ensure the effective and efficient operation of precision manufacturing equipment within our Research and Development function. Duties include equipment set‑up, maintenance, repairs, re‑validation, and calibration. The role supports a 24/7 service requirement to maintain product integrity and compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Manage safe, efficient and reliable operation of precision manufacturing equipment, including filling lines and freeze dryers.
- Coordinate and supervise planned preventive maintenance (PPM) programmes for specialist production plant and equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve equipment faults, prioritising unplanned maintenance activities and implementing corrective actions to minimise downtime.
- Conduct root cause investigations and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability, safety and performance.
- Provide 24/7 on‑call engineering support as part of a rota, ensuring continued operation of critical systems such as freeze dryers and temperature‑controlled storage.
- Make timely engineering decisions and implement corrective actions to maintain product integrity and ensure compliance with operational procedures and quality requirements.
- Strong experience maintaining and troubleshooting precision manufacturing equipment.
- Experience coordinating planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities for specialist production equipment.
- Ability to prioritise workload effectively and develop practical solutions to minimise downtime.
- Solid understanding of clean manufacturing environments and equipment reliability to maintain product quality.
- Willingness to provide 24/7 on‑call support as part of a rota and make independent technical decisions during out‑of‑hours incidents.
- Experience with critical systems such as freeze dryers, cold rooms and associated process equipment.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving, communication and leadership skills to support operational continuity.
- Minimum NVQ Level 2 or equivalent mechanical subject qualification, with practical experience in containment laboratories, clean rooms or similar environments.
- Significant experience with GMP manufacturing equipment, including filling lines and freeze dryers.
- Experience supervising contractors and junior staff.
- Knowledge of GMP/ISO
9001 quality management systems. - Strong skills in maintaining and updating technical documentation (risk assessments, SOPs, drawings).
- Proficiency in MS Excel and Word.
- Experience using building management alarm and PPM systems is advantageous.
- Market Pay Supplement up to £6,000 per annum (non‑pensionable).
- On‑call allowance provided upon appointment.
