Facilitates patient flow through the referral, scheduling, and financial clearance process. Responsible for obtaining demographic and financial information to ensure accurate patient identification and to secure reimbursement. Performs pre-registration functions and insurance eligibility verification. Provides estimates for services and requests and secures payments.
Responsibilities- Schedule patients for hospital or medical group services by incoming phone calls, online requests, or outbound to patients; assign to work within the central referral management system to identify and schedule specialist and primary care referrals to NHP practices and external providers to promote in-system retention and continuity of care.
- Provide excellent customer service to physician offices and patients; contribute to reduction of abandoned call rate, call length, and average speed answered through best practices and workflow improvements.
- Receive and verify faxed physician orders for compliance and accuracy; perform insurance eligibility verification and execute payer requirements; obtain accurate insurance benefit information from payers.
- Use patient estimation tool to calculate patient liability estimates; understand coding, procedural protocols, and charge description master.
- Initiate requests for authorizations, pre-certifications, notices of admission, and referrals from insurance companies; follow up with payers and providers to ensure authorizations are in place.
- Contact patients to perform pre-registration: demographic verification, convey insurance benefits, and estimate liabilities; collect liabilities prior to service and refer patients expressing financial hardship to Financial Counseling.
- Safeguard patient confidentiality by adhering to all compliance guidelines in place; fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma required; minimum of 2‑year job‑related experience.
- National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) certification within one year of hire.
- Basic proficiency with MS Word and MS Excel; customer service and organizational skills.
- Associate’s degree preferred with 6 months job‑related experience.
- Manual: requires some manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity.
- Occupational: little or no potential for occupational risk.
- Physical effort: sedentary/light effort; may exert up to 10 lb force.
- Physical environment: generally pleasant working conditions.
- Salary range: $19 – $25 hourly.
