Patient Safety Companions provide close observation and constant monitoring of patients with changes in physical or mental status under the supervision of the registered nurse upon receipt of a physician order. They perform all duties necessary to transport patients and equipment within the hospital, supporting optimum safe and efficient patient care. Patient safety companions seek to provide the highest quality care while demonstrating respect for the dignity of each patient consistent with the hospital's philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the nursing department.

• Assist in the delivery of patient care as a nursing team member by performing tasks directed by the nurse for patients who require close observation.
• Always maintain patient safety; adhere to hospital policy on infection control by performing hand hygiene and isolation precautions.
• Provide comfort measures and therapeutic activities to patients as directed by the nurse (assist with vision and hearing aids, sleep/noise reduction strategies, orientation, ambulation, and toileting).
• Review the written care plan with the nurse, receive a report from the primary nurse upon arrival to the unit, and report off to the primary nurse when leaving; communicate any special care needs, unusual conditions, patient concerns or complaints.
• Assist with safe transfer of patients to and from stretcher or wheelchair to bed or chair, using safe transfer techniques and assistive devices, and proper body mechanics.
• Transport patients within the hospital, adhering to safe transfer techniques and always utilizing two patient identifiers and a ticket to ride.
• Utilize Vocera and Zebra/IPOD devices appropriately and maintain patient privacy.
• Assist with continuity of patient care through harmonious working relationships with other staff and appropriate interfacing with patients, families, and providers.
• Distribute equipment (e.g., pumps, wheelchairs, venodynes, VMS, feeding pumps) within 15 minutes of nursing floor requests.
• Assist with transportation of stretchers or other equipment to hospital departments.
• Maintain and model Nuvance Health values.
• Demonstrate regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
• Perform other duties as required.

High school diploma or equivalent experience. Must complete Patient Safety Companion orientation and competencies.

Basic Life Support Certification required within 6 months of hire date.

• Manual: significant manual skills/motor coordination & finger dexterity.
• Occupational: some occupational risk.
• Physical effort: very heavy effort; may exert up to 50 lbs. force.
• Physical environment: generally pleasant working conditions.
• Credentials: BLS.
