SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of clerical and computer related activities and phlebotomy with minimal supervision. This individual interacts with patients of all ages and works effectively with others to meet the needs of the patients.
- Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. - Experience:
Prefer six months of phlebotomy experience, preferably in a hospital setting. Previous computer experience is preferred. Effective interpersonal skills are also required. - License: N/A
- Responsibility I: Performs Phlebotomy activities on patients of all ages with minimal supervision, including collecting Stat, Timed and other samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture, verifying patient information, labeling all samples, initialing, time and date all blood specimen tubes, maintaining specimen integrity, performing other duties such as data collecting, filing, faxing, assisting technologist, and transporting samples.
- Responsibility II: Specimen Processing of all samples submitted to laboratory for testing, verifying all samples are labeled correctly, verifying all samples are in correct containers/tubes/media, receiving all samples in LIS, reprinting labels as needed, centrifugation of samples, visually verifying all sample integrity prior to delivery, answering all telephone calls, and recording messages accurately.
- Responsibility III: Performs computer related activities, monitoring patient collection pending log each hour, maintaining accuracy of pending log, receiving samples in LIS, reprinting labels if necessary, test ordering for miscellaneous and Send-Out/ reference laboratory samples, generating reference laboratory manifest and packaging for courier pick-up, competency with laboratory hand-held equipment and LIS systems.
- Responsibility IV: Advises Manager of complaints and problems, reporting possible safety hazards, discrepancies in patient care, on the job accidents, offering solutions, documenting reports in writing.
- Responsibility V: Maintains professional skills and competencies, performing required testing for competency evaluation, completing all mandated competencies, completing hospital required mandatory education, accepting special project assignments, performing new procedures after training, presenting to staff knowledge gained, developing and reviewing professional goals, continuously developing skills, assuming responsibility for self-growth, maintaining current knowledge of laboratory procedures, participating in orientation/training of new personnel, offering plans/suggestions for department improvement.
- Responsibility VI: Follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, adapting to changes in practice, following safety, maintaining clean work area, attending department meetings, maintaining awareness of changes, using spare time in work-related activities, complying with policies, arriving on time, treating patient information confidentially, exhibiting ethical work behavior, taking part in quality assurance program, promoting a professional image, making constructive suggestions for departmental improvements.
- Responsibility VII: Demonstrates regard for the dignity and respect of all patients, family members, visitors and Medical Center personnel, displaying a caring and courteous attitude, promoting and contributing positively to intra- and inter-departmental relationships, maintaining confidentiality of employees and departmental information, adhering to dress codes, maintaining professional demeanor, developing rapport, demonstrating ability to work well with others.
