Veterinary Assistant – Pet Vet Care Centers’ Sound Equine Veterinary Hospital
Pet Vet Care Centers is currently seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our team of compassionate professionals dedicated to providing exceptional care for animals and people.
Position OverviewAs a Veterinary Assistant, you will support veterinarians and technicians by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising, and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative tasks. You will deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities- Provide compassionate care to all patients
- Greet patients and their owners, show them to an examining room, and record the patient's weight and vital signs upon arrival
- Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs)
- Calm and soothe anxious patients
- Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or patient restraint
- Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
- Operate and maintain hospital equipment, including EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, and other machines
- Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, and maintain proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs
- Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, and recognize/report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors
- Communicate positively with clients, ensuring they feel comfortable leaving their pet(s)
- Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans
- Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital daily; clean equipment, kennels, and facilities using chemicals and supplies; ensure safe use of chemicals; complete laundry
- Work with patients overnight, ensuring they are clean and properly groomed before release
- Adhere to the hospital's safety and wellness regulations
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Maintain accurate medical records
- Show up for work regularly; full‑time presence at every shift is essential
- Promote hospital products and services and support the organization
- Respond respectfully and urgently to directions from the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs)
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager or in a specialty area (e.g., dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, internal medicine)
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One or more years of experience in a veterinary environment, successfully performing all of the duties of this position
- Horse handling skills
- Care and compassion – desire to build rapport, provide personal assistance, and emotional support
- Animal restraint and safety – sound judgment when handling patients and taking appropriate precautionary steps
- Communication – effective and appropriate methods of interacting with others
- Team orientation – cooperatively works with the team to accomplish goals
- Dependability – responsible in completing all job tasks
- Cleanliness standards – follows sanitization and sterilization policies and procedures
- Energy and productivity – completes tasks quickly and thoroughly without prompting
- Time management – manages time and prioritizes work tasks effectively
Technical skills and learning – keeps up‑to‑date with new technical skills and knowledge in the field - Care of equipment – performs operation checks and maintenance of equipment
- Day shift and fill‑in swings as needed
- One weekend per month required
