Overview
Advanced Airframe Design Engineer position at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems located in San Diego, CA. This role is part of the Advanced Aircraft Engineering Organization and focuses on the design of unmanned aerial vehicles, modification of existing aircraft structures, and special sensor integration projects.
Responsibilities- Create and maintain advanced airframe CAD models, drawings, and installation assemblies that meet structural integrity, weight, and cost targets.
- Produce airframe structural configuration layouts and detail designs including preliminary sizing, stress analysis, joint layouts, and interface boundary definitions for metallic and composite materials.
- Apply composite part detail processes, including stacking sequences, lamination theory, honeycomb core, bonded assemblies, and manufacturing fabrication processes.
- Coordinate with stress, manufacturing, procurement, quality control, and other departments to mature designs from conception to production.
- Utilize engineering and manufacturing development experience for composite structural parts and assemblies.
- Support prototype and rate part production, including tool design, manufacturing planning, and hands‑on fabrication.
- Use Creo, NX, Fiber
SIM, and FEM-based analysis tools such as Creo Simulate, NX Simcenter/Nastran, FEMAP for both metal and composite parts. - Apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5 and model‑based definition using Creo and NX.
- Maintain parametric product geometry models.
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD in engineering or related discipline; progressive engineering experience: six+ years with bachelor’s, four+ years with master’s, or two+ years with PhD.
- Deep understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; ability to apply these concepts across complex problems.
- Strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and lead a team of less experienced professionals.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Must obtain and maintain DoD Security Clearance.
