Heating and Air Mechanic - Skilled HVAC Work in a Unique Facility Setting

This position pays $36.27 an hour!

We're hiring a dependable HVAC mechanic to handle hands‑on installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems across multiple buildings and equipment. You’ll work on boilers, chillers, walk‑in coolers, and air handlers—ensuring systems run safely and efficiently in a unique environment that includes animal care, food service, and guest facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for installation, diagnosis and repair, preventative maintenance, and efficient operation of equipment that supplies heat, air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs HVAC units at regular intervals to ensure efficient operation.
  • Adjusts and repairs compressor, motor, air‑cooling coil, and chiller units.
  • Adjusts and repairs hot water boilers, forced‑air gas furnaces, and electric heat pumps.
  • Adjusts and repairs refrigeration systems such as coolers and freezers for food storage.
  • Adjusts thermostatic controls of heating, cooling and refrigeration units to keep temperature at specified levels.
Installation & Equipment Handling
  • Installs HVAC filters, screens, and works with duct installation.
  • Operates hand‑held power tools and other instruments used to repair or calibrate HVAC equipment and keeps equipment in good working order.
  • Maintains adequate spare parts inventory to perform work efficiently.
Team Support & Safety
  • Provides support during special events such as Eggs, Paws & Claws and Wild lights.
  • Assures safety of self, staff, animals and guests through participation in safety training, compliance with SOPs, and proper equipment maintenance.
  • Assists other facilities staff when required.
Mission & Sustainability
  • Actively supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds.
  • Implements sustainable practices whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years’ HVAC experience highly preferred.
  • 2 years of journeyman experience installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC units preferred.
  • Experience with low‑pressure boilers required.
  • Possession of a refrigerant usage certificate required.
Technical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of construction, assembly/disassembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to understand assembly instructions, operating manuals, blueprints and wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials hazards, and safety precautions for HVAC installation.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring and Ohio Building Code regulations on HVAC installation and federal, state and local laws dealing with CFC disposal.
  • Experience with computerized temperature controls and Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes.
  • Experience with Windows platforms preferred.

  • Skill in using tools, materials, and equipment used in heating and cooling.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials required.
  • Ability to work from drawings and specifications and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Work Requirements
  • Work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Plan and organize work efficiently and cost‑effectively without direct supervision.
  • Provide excellent guest service and uphold guest service standards.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with all Columbus Zoo Family of Parks (CZFP) team members and contacts.
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures, including safety protocols.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter.
  • Possession of a valid state‑issued motor vehicle operator’s license and good driving record.
  • Adhere to Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug‑free workplace policy.
  • Pass a criminal history background check annually.
