Instructor/Assistant Professor of Political Science and First Year Seminar - Tenure Track
Tenure-track faculty position in Political Science and First Year Seminar; part of a strong social science division. This position requires a teaching load of the equivalent of 30 credits/year across all levels of courses. Priority is on excellent teaching—including online instruction, synchronous delivery, advising, assessment, service, student recruitment, curriculum development, articulation with high school and university faculty, and professional development activities.
Division responsibilities are described in the faculty employment policies section of the NWC Board Policy Manual.
- Teach first- and second-year courses in Political Science and First Year Seminar in face-to-face, online, Zoom, or a combination of modalities.
- Provide high-quality, engaging instruction.
- Coordinate the Political Science Program, recommend, orient, and oversee adjunct instructors, recommend curriculum and degree requirements, and participate in program articulation.
- Actively help with the recruitment of new majors (e.g., campus visits, emails, and telephone calls to prospective students).
- Assist in the ongoing development and assessment of curriculum.
- Develop course syllabi for assigned courses and use effective varied instruction.
- Evaluate student performance and achievement of course, program, and all-college student learning outcomes.
- Recommend appropriate texts and teaching aids that enhance the teaching-learning process.
- Contribute to delivery of instruction using distance delivery methods.
- Advise students and support them in program-related activities.
- Post and observe office hours for academic advising and student consultation; hold office hours at times that support student success and meet with students as needed by appointment.
- Advise and assist students during the ongoing registration process.
- Serve on college committees as requested, elected, or assigned.
- Contribute to program, division, and department meetings.
- Maintain a high level of content knowledge and engage in ongoing professional development in one’s field and teaching.
- Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge and competence in appropriate academic disciplines.
- Demonstrate mutual respect and civility to promote the highest level of student learning and productive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, and community members.
- Contribute to positive program articulations with schools and colleges.
- Contribute to the college-wide assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Actively participate in assisting the college in maintaining standards required for accreditation.
- Assist others as needed.
- Participate in college activities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Position begins Fall 2026. Faculty orientation is 8/20‑8/21/2026.
