At Westinghouse, innovation is in our DNA. We are creative. We think differently. We reimagine the possible across the nuclear industry every day.

As a Sustainability Manager you will lead and accelerate sustainability initiatives at our nuclear licensed manufacturing site in Preston. This role will play a critical part in helping the business define, embed, and deliver on its sustainability goals, ensuring alignment with corporate commitments, stakeholder expectations, and regulatory frameworks.

You will work closely and report to Head of Environment and senior leadership to build the foundations for a structured sustainability programme—covering areas such as carbon reduction, resource efficiency, biodiversity, circular economy, and social value.

This is a hands‑on role requiring someone who can balance strategic vision with operational delivery. You will need to be comfortable working cross‑functionally, influencing teams at all levels, and driving progress in a highly regulated environment.

Responsibilities

1. Sustainability Strategy Development

  • Develop and deliver a site‑level sustainability strategy, aligned with corporate sustainability targets, regulatory obligations, and industry best practices.
  • Identify and prioritise key sustainability projects, such as carbon footprint reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation, waste minimisation, and biodiversity projects.
  • Establish clear metrics, goals, and roadmaps to track progress and demonstrate impact.

2. Operational Delivery & Hands‑On Support

  • Work closely with operational teams to integrate sustainability initiatives into daily activities, ensuring practical, achievable outcomes.
  • Lead or support the delivery of key projects—from feasibility studies to implementation and performance monitoring.
  • Provide expert sustainability advice to teams across the site, helping them understand their role in meeting targets.

3. Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including senior management, environment, safety, production, and engineering teams, to ensure sustainability is embedded across departments.
  • Engage with external partners, including regulators, supply chain partners, and local community groups, to communicate progress and align with external expectations.
  • Develop and deliver sustainability reports, dashboards, and presentations, providing clear updates on progress, challenges, and next steps.

4. Foundations for Future Growth

  • Help define the future structure and resource needs for sustainability at the site.
  • Contribute to the onboarding and development of any future sustainability or environmental roles.
  • Support the Head of Environment in making the case for long‑term investment and resourcing in sustainability initiatives.
Qualifications:
  • Experience delivering sustainability programmes in a complex, regulated, or industrial setting (nuclear, energy, manufacturing, chemical, or similar).
  • Experience with key sustainability topics, including carbon/net zero, climate risk, energy efficiency, circular economy, waste, biodiversity, and social impact.
  • Ability to work hands‑on and operationally, engaging directly with teams to deliver real‑world projects.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the confidence to work across functions and levels.
  • Experience developing strategies, targets, and reporting mechanisms to track sustainability performance.
  • Excellent project management.
  • Familiarity with UK and international sustainability frameworks (e.g., Science‑Based Targets, TCFD, CDP, SECR).
