Job overview

A Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine provides senior clinical leadership within the Emergency Department (ED), delivering expert assessment, decision‑making, and management of acutely unwell or injured patients while overseeing the performance, safety, and development of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will;

Lead the delivery of high‑quality, timely emergency care for patients presenting with undifferentiated and complex conditions.

Provide senior clinical decision‑making to support safe flow through the ED and into inpatient or community pathways.

Ensure clinical governance, patient safety, and service improvement remain central to departmental practice.

This is a fixed term Locum Consultant post for 6 months.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Emergency Service for the Directorate.

Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the coordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley Hospitals.

Participate in the Consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleague’s absence.

Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full time, and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.

Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.

Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the area.

Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

Clinical duties will include all those duties normally expected of a Consultant in a similar sized Emergency Department in the United Kingdom.

Working for our organisation

The two Emergency Departments act as a single Emergency Service based on the two sites. The Royal Preston site is designated as the Major Trauma Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria with #team ED leading the multi-disciplinary trauma team.

Successful applicants will join an extensive team of Middle Grade doctors, Junior Doctors and ACPs providing comprehensive clinical support to the departments. We are now taking ED trainees at ST3 level for part of their Paediatric EM rotation. There is a dedicated, highly skilled nursing workforce including a team of Nurse Clinicians, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapists providing extensive cover.
