Clinical Lead Speech & Language Therapist – Acute Medicine/Surgery

Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 per annum (pro rata)

We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Lead Speech & Language Therapist to drive improvement across acute and outpatient services. The role involves co‑leading the service across two sites, reviewing service models, streamlining pathways, strengthening multidisciplinary teamwork, and delivering training and education to enhance care for patients with swallowing and communication needs.

• Lead and provide operational management of the Speech & Language Therapy service to acute medicine and surgery.
• Lead service development activities and support staff working.
• Use advanced clinical skills to assess, diagnose and independently manage complex dysphagia and disorders of communication.
• Represent Speech & Language Therapy within multidisciplinary team settings, contributing specialist expertise for patients with communication and swallowing difficulties.
• Integrate with MDTs and contribute to training, education and quality improvement projects.
• Motivate patients to engage in the therapeutic process.
• Use excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, adopting a flexible approach to work practice.
• Participate in instrumental assessment using videofluoroscopy and fibre optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES).
• Contribute to trust‑level service developments that impact care for patients with swallowing and communication difficulties.
• Maintain clinical professional development, staying up to date with research and advancements in the field.

• HCPC registration
• RCSLT registration
• Graduate or post‑graduate qualification in Speech and Language Pathology
• Post‑graduate courses in a relevant clinical area of Speech and Language Therapy
• Evidence of CPD in relevant areas, working towards a master’s level

• Master’s qualification or modules in a relevant area

• Highly specialised knowledge in the clinical area
• Assess, diagnose and manage complex dysphagia
• Assess, diagnose and manage complex communication disorders
• Awareness of emerging assessment and treatment developments and ability to critically appraise the evidence base
• Excellent MDT working skills
• Experience of planning and delivering training or education to MDTs

• Trained in instrumental dysphagia assessment, including VFS and FEES
• Experience with local research projects
• Experience of working with an outpatient caseload
