Anaesthetic Practitioners - Royal Preston Hospital

We are recruiting motivated, dynamic, forward‑thinking Anaesthetic & Recovery Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners to join our growing theatre teams at Royal Preston Hospital. Candidates will support the delivery and coordination of world‑class patient care in theatres.

You must have the anaesthetic course or ODP qualification.

Responsibilities include the delivery of high‑standard care, acting as a role model, and promoting equality in practice by recognising and meeting individual patient needs.

Remote interview is not offered.

Main duties of the job

Working at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides experience in a large theatre directorate with 32 theatres across multiple specialities (robotic surgery, urology, colorectal, orthopaedics, head & neck, vascular, plastics, ENT, GI, neurosurgery, breast, obstetrics, gynaecology, emergency, trauma, thrombectomy). The role is staffing 24‑hour units, covering 11‑13 hour shifts, twilights until 11:30 pm, weekends and night duty.

Excellent communication skills are required, with the ability to work independently while closely linking with the operating team and managing a demanding workload.

Job responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care per local/national standards and evidence‑based guidelines
  • Continuously update clinical skills in line with national recommendations
  • Demonstrate competent practice and maintain national recognised qualifications (ODP, Anaesthetic)
  • Adhere to policies, procedures and evidence‑based practice
  • Maintain basic scrub skills for ODP
  • Champion patient safety and promote best practice
  • Ensure compliance with the Trust safety agenda and hygiene standards
  • Proactively manage risk, maintaining patient safety and legal compliance
  • Communicate relevant information to multidisciplinary teams internally and externally
  • Participate in and facilitate continuous professional development for junior staff and students
  • Create a positive learning environment, providing guidance and pastoral support
  • Maintain and develop professional competence, extending knowledge and skills within scope of role
Person specification Qualifications & Education
  • Registered nurse or ODP with current NMC/HCPC registration
  • Post‑registration Anaesthetic course if not an ODP
  • Evidence of CPD (experienced band 5+)
  • Basic IT skills
  • IV drug administration
  • Degree or equivalent
  • Transfer course
  • NMC recognised mentorship qualification or willingness to pursue within 18 months
  • Venepuncture and cannulation
Knowledge & Experience
  • Experience as an Anaesthetic Practitioner
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Awareness of current issues in practice
  • Willingness to expand clinical role
  • Understanding of ethical issues
  • Knowledge of Harris Flex and Evolve
