Reporting directly to the Transport Manager or Depot Team Leader, the HGV 2 Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of goods from one location to another, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining strict adherence to road safety regulations and company values of teamwork, care, customer centricity, respect, and integrity.
Key Responsibilities- Driving and Delivery Operative HGVs (Class
2) – Transport goods to various destinations, follow routes and schedules, and ensure timely, safe delivery in accordance with statutory and legislative regulations. - Safety and Compliance –
- Adhere to all road safety, traffic, telematics and driving rules.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness.
- Comply with UK and EU driving regulations, Working Time Directive, and take required breaks.
- Use Tacho, the driving app, and other required technology to meet driving standards.
- Promote health and safety for yourself and colleagues; load goods securely and use phones only for work purposes when safe.
- Vehicle Maintenance – Perform basic maintenance, report mechanical issues and defects, keep the vehicle clean and presentable, and ensure load stability and protection at all times.
- Documentation and Record Keeping – Maintain accurate records of deliveries, mileage and vehicle maintenance; complete delivery paperwork and obtain necessary signatures.
- Customer Service – Interact professionally and courteously with clients, customers, road users and pedestrians; handle vehicles and loads with care to avoid damages.
- Company Objectives – Support other business areas, participate in continuous improvement projects, meet key performance indicators, and represent the company as a leader ambassador.
- Valid HGV Class 2 licence and, where applicable, a valid UK driving licence for the vehicle type.
- Digital Tachograph Card.
- Excellent knowledge of UK road networks, road safety awareness and navigation skills.
- Basic mechanical skills for vehicle checks and minor repairs.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
- Reliable, punctual and responsible with a "can‑do" attitude.
- Experience in long‑distance driving and load securing techniques.
- Standard DBS check required.
- Long hours and overnight trips may be required.
- Variable weather conditions.
- Shift patterns may include early morning, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
- Physical demands include loading and unloading goods.
- Average working week of approximately 45 hours.
- Generous holiday allowance: 22 days of annual leave plus bank holidays.
- Flexibility to buy up to 3 extra days or sell back up to 2 days.
- Length of Service holiday awards: 1 extra day for every 3 years of service.
