The University of Pretoria’s commitment to quality makes us one of the top research universities in the country and gives us a competitive advantage in international science and technology development.

Responsibilities
  • Teach and co‑design undergraduate modules focused on professional and technical engineering communication across the first three years of engineering programmes, in collaboration with disciplinary engineering academics, with particular emphasis on the development and assessment of ECSA Graduate Attribute 6 (Professional and Technical Communication).
  • Coordinate professional communication teaching at scale, including curriculum alignment, assessment design, moderation processes and operational systems suitable for large cohorts (typically 500+ students), ensuring consistency, efficiency and academic quality.
  • Design, implement and continuously refine learning activities and assessments that support written, oral, visual and multimodal engineering communication for both technical and non‑technical audiences, aligned with professional and accreditation standards.
  • Work closely with engineering academics and teaching teams to integrate communication practices authentically within disciplinary contexts, rather than as standalone or remedial interventions.
  • Contribute to undergraduate supervision, particularly where projects or capstone activities include substantial communication, reporting or professional practice components.
  • Engage in scholarly activity related to engineering education, professional practice or communication at scale, and contribute to publications, conference outputs or curriculum scholarship aligned with the department’s strategic focus.
  • Support curriculum development, accreditation and quality assurance processes, including contribution to documentation and evidence related to Graduate Attributes and programme reviews.
  • Perform assigned departmental and faculty duties, including coordination, academic administration and participation in teaching and learning initiatives, appropriate to the level of appointment.
Minimum Requirements
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Engineering, Engineering Education, Technical or Professional Communication, English, Applied Linguistics, Sociology, Science Communication, Professional Practice or a closely related discipline.
  • A master’s degree in a field aligned with the undergraduate qualification (or a cognate field) that supports professional, technical or disciplinary communication in engineering or other technical contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in higher education, with clear evidence of excellent written and oral English proficiency.
  • Demonstrated exposure to engineering or technical disciplines, either through teaching within engineering programmes, working closely with engineering academics, supporting engineering students or professional experience in technical or industry‑facing environments.
  • Proven experience developing and teaching professional and technical communication practices (written, oral, visual and multimodal) for engineering or technical audiences.
  • Experience teaching or coordinating large undergraduate cohorts, ideally in contexts of 500 students or more, including assessment design, moderation and operational coordination at scale.
  • Evidence of scholarly, professional or practice‑based outputs appropriate to the level of appointment, such as peer‑reviewed publications (at least
1), conference papers, curriculum scholarship or recognised professional outputs.
Added Advantages and Preferences
  • Evidence of teaching excellence.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have teaching and research expertise that complement the specific needs of the teaching team.
  • Related industry work or consulting experience.
