ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR (One post)

The successful candidate will be required to:

• Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in linguistics and literature in isiZulu;
• Supervise Master’s and Doctoral students;
• Participate in curriculum development and redesign of undergraduate and postgraduate modules and programmes as required;
• Conduct and p resent research at local and international conferences;
• Publish articles in accredited (and preferably high-impact) journals;
• Conduct academic administration and other duties, as determined by the Head of Department;
• Participate in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research, and community engagement;
• Participate in academic citizenship (e.g., peer reviewing, moderation, and external examination);
• Provide academic leadership and mentoring; and
• Participate in generating third-stream income for the department.

• A doctoral degree in African languages, specializing in isiZulu;
• Seven to ten years teaching experience (undergraduate and postgraduate level) appropriate to the appointed position;
• Evidence of extensive supervision to completion of Master’s and Doctoral students;
• A proven record of research and publication outputs in a relevant field of specialisation, e.g., isiZulu literature or linguistics, appropriate to the post level;
• International recognition as an expert in the discipline;
• Evidence of successful curriculum design, implementation, and transformation

• Ability to function in a dynamic multilingual, multicultural environment;
• Language and communication skills appropriate to the academic environment;
• Appropriate computer skills (e.g., expertise in the use of Microsoft Office suite of applications as well as online learning management systems).

• An NRF rating is strongly recommended.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium
