Mechanical Technician – R&D | Engineering & Defence Sector | Centurion, Gauteng
An established leader in advanced antenna and RF technology is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Technician to join their dynamic Research & Development team
. This role is ideal for a hands‑on, detail‑oriented technician passionate about innovation, prototyping, and precision engineering within a high‑tech environment.
Prototype Assembly & Modification: Support engineers in assembling, modifying, and testing mechanical prototypes and systems.
Machining & Fabrication: Execute precision machining and fabrication tasks in line with engineering specifications.
Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret mechanical drawings, CAD models, and related documentation accurately.
Testing & Data Collection: Set up and perform mechanical and environmental tests, record results, and provide technical feedback.
Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Identify and resolve technical issues during prototype development and testing phases.
Design
Collaboration:
Work closely with design engineers to refine components and assemblies based on test findings.Workshop Maintenance & Safety: Maintain workshop tools and equipment, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
Material & Inventory Management: Manage mechanical components and coordinate with procurement for R&D supplies.
Qualification: Diploma, Certificate, or Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or related field.
Experience: Minimum 3 years in product development, from concept through prototyping.
Technical
Skills:Skilled in mechanical assembly, fitting, and fabrication techniques.
Proficient in 3D printing and additive manufacturing tools.
Understanding of materials science (metals, plastics, composites).
Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, or electromechanical systems.
Ability to interpret CAD models (Solid Works, Inventor, eDrawings).
Advantageous: Experience in the Defence sector and familiarity with certification processes.
Software & Tools: Advanced in MS Excel and Word; familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics NAV beneficial.
Personal Attributes:
Strong problem‑solving and diagnostic skills.
