Senior PostgreSQL DBA L2/L3 (Contract / Permanent) Pretoria/Onsite

We are looking for an experienced Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator to support and maintain enterprise-level production database environments
.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration, availability, performance, security and resilience of critical databases, with a strong focus on production support, troubleshooting, performance tuning, high availability and disaster recovery
.

The role is suited to a strong L2 or L3 DBA who is comfortable working independently in a highly transactional environment and participating in standby / after-hours support when required.

• Administer and support PostgreSQL databases across enterprise production environments.
• Monitor database health, performance, capacity and availability.
• Perform performance tuning and query optimisation to resolve database and application performance issues.
• Diagnose and resolve complex production incidents
  , including blocking, locking, deadlocks and database performance issues.
• Implement and maintain backup and recovery strategies.
• Support and test Disaster Recovery (DR) processes and procedures.
• Implement and maintain High Availability (HA) and replication solutions.
• Perform database installations, upgrades, patching and maintenance.
• Manage database security, users, roles, permissions and access controls.
• Monitor database growth, storage utilisation and overall environment health.
• Perform database migrations and support infrastructure or platform changes.
• Develop and maintain database monitoring, maintenance and automation processes.
• Participate in change management, incident management and production support processes.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation and operational procedures.
• Participate in standby / on-call support for critical production environments.

• Strong hands-on experience as a PostgreSQL DBA in production environments.
• Experience supporting enterprise and/or highly transactional databases
  .
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL administration, configuration and maintenance
  .
• Strong SQL and query optimisation capabilities.
• Practical experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting
  .
• Experience with PostgreSQL backup and recovery
  .
• Experience with replication and High Availability technologies.
• Practical Disaster Recovery experience, including DR testing.
• Strong understanding of database security, roles and permissions.
• Experience with database monitoring and health checks.
• Experience with database migrations and upgrades.
• Ability to investigate and resolve high-priority production incidents
  .
• Experience working in 24/7 production environments
  .
• Willingness to participate in standby / on-call support
  .

• SQL Server DBA experience.
• Microsoft SQL Server HA/DR
  , Always On, replication or clustering experience.
• Power Shell or scripting/automation experience.
• Microsoft Azure / cloud database experience.
• Experience supporting large-scale enterprise database estates.
• Experience in regulated financial services, logistics, or other highly transactional environments.

Candidates should demonstrate either:

• L3-level capability
  , with the ability to independently manage complex production database environments and resolve advanced technical issues;
  or
• Strong L2 capability with demonstrable experience operating independently and the technical depth to develop into an L3 role.

• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Able to work independently in production environments.
• Comfortable working under pressure during critical incidents.
• Strong attention to detail and operational discipline.
• Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Proactive approach to monitoring, performance and database reliability.
• Strong documentation and change-control discipline.

• Relevant tertiary qualification and/or recognised database certification preferred.
• 5+ years' relevant database administration experience
  , with strong hands-on PostgreSQL experience.
• Proven experience supporting production database environments
  .
• Availability for standby / after-hours support where required.
