Position: It Infrastructure & Platforms Lead (Wits Health Consortium)

Background:

Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics

Main purpose of the job:

Provide hands-on technical expertise across WHC's infrastructure and platform environment, ensuring the availability, performance, resilience, and supportability of server, network, cloud, backup, and related infrastructure services across on-premises, hosted, and cloud environments

Location:

Key performance areas:

Administer, maintain and continuously improve infrastructure and platform services across on-premise and Cloud environments
Support and administer server, storage and virtualization, backup, and recovery platforms to ensure stability and availability
Support, maintain and optimise network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, Wi‑Fi, and VPN services
Support and maintain Microsoft 365, Cloud, and hybrid infrastructure environments
Develop and maintain infrastructure standards, operational procedures, and technical documentation
Coordinate infrastructure incident resolution and root cause analysis
Coordinate and execute backup, disaster recovery, and resilience testing activities
Monitor infrastructure performance, capacity, availability, and operational risks
Liaise with and coordinate Service Providers and Vendors
Contribute to infrastructure projects, upgrades, migrations, and technology refresh initiatives
Provide technical guidance and support to IT colleagues and external service providers where required
Support compliance, audit, and business continuity requirements relating to infrastructure services

Required minimum education and training:

Relevant Degree and/or equivalent qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Infrastructure Management, Networking, or related fields

Required minimum work experience:

Minimum 5 - 8 years' experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Systems Administration, Cloud Administration, Networking, or Infrastructure Operations

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

Certifications in:
CCNA / CCNP
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA Server+
VMware VCP
Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate
AWS Associate Certifications
Microsoft Server Technologies
Linux Administration
ITIL Foundation
Experience supporting enterprise server, network, Cloud, and backup environments
Experience managing hybrid (on-premises and Cloud) infrastructure environments and managing infrastructure service providers and Vendors
Demonstrated experience operating as a Senior Technical Specialist within enterprise environments
Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills across servers, networking, virtualization, and Cloud platforms
Ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure issues
Strong understanding of infrastructure architecture, networking, Cloud services, backup and disaster recovery
Proven experience supporting business-critical infrastructure environments
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and Stakeholder engagement abilities
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams and have strong customer service orientation
