About the Role
Our client is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Senior Research Associate to join their medicinal chemistry team in Pretoria. This role is integral to the discovery of novel therapeutic agents, focusing on the design, synthesis, and optimization of small molecules. You will play a crucial role in drug discovery programs, working collaboratively with biologists and pharmacologists to identify and advance promising drug candidates.
The ideal candidate possesses a strong synthetic organic chemistry background and a keen interest in applying chemical principles to solve biological problems in a fast-paced research environment.
- Design and synthesize novel organic compounds with potential therapeutic applications.
- Optimize lead compounds through iterative structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies.
- Utilize modern synthetic methodologies and purification techniques to obtain target molecules.
- Characterize synthesized compounds using spectroscopic methods (NMR, MS, etc.).
- Collaborate closely with biologists and pharmacologists to test and evaluate compounds.
- Maintain detailed experimental records and contribute to scientific reports and publications.
- Master's degree or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience in synthetic organic chemistry, preferably within the pharmaceutical industry.
- Demonstrated ability to design and execute multi-step synthetic routes.
- Proficiency in modern spectroscopic techniques (e.g., 1D/2D NMR, LC-MS) for compound characterization.
- Familiarity with drug discovery processes and SAR exploration.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting in Pretoria.
