About the Role

Our client is looking for a highly skilled and innovative Plant Breeder to lead their Field Crops research and development program based in Pretoria . This critical position involves the design and execution of breeding programs aimed at developing new, improved varieties of staple crops that offer enhanced yield, disease resistance, and climate adaptability. You will utilize advanced breeding techniques, including molecular markers and genomics, to accelerate the development pipeline and address the evolving needs of the agricultural sector in Gauteng .

This role is ideal for a motivated scientist seeking to make a significant impact on food security and agricultural sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement comprehensive plant breeding programs for key field crops (e.g., maize, wheat, soybeans).
  • Utilize traditional breeding methods in conjunction with modern genomic and marker-assisted selection (MAS) techniques.
  • Conduct field trials, evaluate breeding lines, and select superior genotypes for commercialization or further breeding.
  • Manage seed production and maintenance of elite breeding lines and germplasm.
  • Collaborate with geneticists, agronomists, pathologists, and other specialists to achieve breeding objectives.
  • Analyze phenotypic and genotypic data to guide breeding decisions and understand trait inheritance.
Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Genetics, or a closely related field is required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in plant breeding, with a proven track record of developing successful crop varieties.
  • Extensive knowledge of quantitative genetics, statistical analysis, and breeding methodologies.
  • Proficiency in using molecular tools and bioinformatics software for marker-assisted selection and genomic analysis.
  • Experience working with relevant field crops in the South African context.
