The Opportunity

The Saskatchewan Marshals Service (SMS) is seeking an experienced, detailed oriented officer to join our organization as a detective. This role is responsible for conducting investigations and working on complex cases while working collaboratively with internal and external partners.

As a Saskatchewan Marshal Detective, you will:

  • Enforce federal and provincial law along with all court orders and warrants;
  • Conduct investigations into criminal acts and offences;
  • Bring violent suspects into custody as authorized by law;
  • Use appropriate amount of force when required, including the use of firearms in the protection of life;
  • Track and locate persons who are prolific and/or violent offenders and those wanted on warrants;
  • Work collaboratively with other agencies and parts of government in areas related to national security, nuclear security, immigration and agricultural security and search and rescue;
  • Gather, investigate, disseminate and maintain criminal intelligence data; track trends and maintain criminal statistics;
  • Obtain search warrants, production orders and other judicial authorizations as well as conduct searches and arrest suspects;
  • Properly document and secure evidence obtained from crime scenes or through investigational techniques to ensure proper continuity and safekeeping of evidence;
  • Operate emergency vehicles;
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service to provide emergency assistance to victims of accidents, crimes and natural disasters;
  • Obtain and maintain qualification in the use of force and firearms consistent with the Saskatchewan Police College standard; and
  • Wear a uniform and carry intervention equipment where appropriate and consistent with the direction or policy of the SMS.

  • You will have the ability to:

  • Interpret criminal law, recognize elements of offences and lay appropriate charges as required to provide to public prosecution for court purposes;
  • Enforce federal and provincial law;
  • Recognize and evaluate potential risks to personal/public safety and take steps to minimize and/or resolve these risks;
  • Legally and effectively conduct the arrest of individuals, including the proper processing of subjects consistent with the legal requirements of the Criminal Code or other related statutes;
  • Organize, record and present verbal and written information in a clear, concise, complete, accurate and timely manner;
  • Apply conflict resolution skills and appropriate enforcement techniques with people who display resistant, aggressive or violent behaviours in order to ensure the safety of self and others in order to achieve a satisfactory resolution;
  • Conduct investigations, enforcement, surveillance operations and intelligence gathering;
  • Apply force theories, applications and practices pertaining to law enforcement;
  • Obtain and maintain the standard of qualification as outlined by the Saskatchewan Police College for firearms, OC, conductive energy weapons and other related equipment and police vehicles in enforcement or emergency situations in a responsible and safe manner; and
  • Collect, categorize and present evidence in a court environment.
  • To qualify for this position, you will be required to show proof of the following, consistent with the Police Act 1990 and its regulations:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Be a graduate of a recruit training course recognized by the Saskatchewan Police Commission and have been employed as a member of a police service within Canada within 3 years of the application;
  • Successfully completed a Grade 12 education or equivalent;
  • Successfully pass a job-related physical test administered by the Saskatchewan Marshals Service;
  • Enhanced security screening process and obtain and maintain security clearance as a condition of employment;
