- Operate and drive primarily a semi-truck and flat deck trailer to transport goods and materials mainly on local routes and short interurban routes;
- Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions;
- Load and unload goods;
- Receive and relay information to central dispatch;
- Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption;
- Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment;
- Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection and oversee all aspects of vehicle such as condition of equipment, and loading and unloading of cargo;
- Tarping and ensuring safety and security of cargo;
- Address customers' complaints or concerns;
- Professionalism in customer service
