Position: Cultural Advisor, Nahoonai-a

Position Summary

Responsible for overseeing daily operations at Nahoonai-a Indigenous Housing, providing cultural guidance and mentorship to Indigenous students transitioning to the College.

Eligibility

This is an HRSP Restricted position. Only applicants of Aboriginal ancestry who meet all other necessary qualifications are eligible.

The successful candidate is expected to live on‑site in the Campus Housing Cultural Advisor’s two‑bedroom fully furnished suite.

Responsibilities
  • Provide cultural supports and interventions to enhance academic success and retention of Indigenous students residing in Nahoonai-a.
  • Advocate for students, focusing on safety, and advise them on emotional, mental, and spiritual support.
  • Represent the College on relevant internal and external committees as requested.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director, ISS to ensure understanding of community standards and to manage incidents and behaviour‑related issues.
  • Liaise with Indigenous community services and the Aboriginal Resource Centre to create a network of local supports and attend related meetings.
  • Coordinate services to meet student needs, involving departments such as Student Services and Security Services.
  • Develop and foster peer support and mentor relationships among students.
  • Assist students in preparing for transition from Nahoonai-a to campus housing.
  • Foster Indigenous community engagement by inviting Elders, Knowledge Holders, and Advisors to support students.
  • Assist students by linking them to appropriate community resources.
  • Participate in committees and meetings as required and ensure student confidentiality.
Qualifications
  • Relevant post‑secondary education in Adult Education, Counselling, or Human Services.
  • Minimum three years’ experience working with Indigenous youth; prior post‑secondary experience is an asset.
  • Equivalent combination of education and lived‑experience may be considered.
  • Lived knowledge of Indigenous student experiences, understanding of history and walking in two worlds.
  • Understanding and experience working with Indigenous communities within the region and awareness of First Nations protocols.
  • Demonstrated commitment to an excellent student experience and institutional integrity.
  • General knowledge of personal, social, and educational challenges of post‑secondary students.
  • Understanding of trauma‑informed practice and compassion‑informed practice.
  • Advocacy skills, able to problem‑solve institutional and community barriers for Indigenous students.
  • Knowledge of current post‑secondary housing issues and desire to engage with housing professionals.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships internally and externally.
  • Proficiency with Word and Excel.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Willingness to learn and ask for help.
Salary

CAD $67,893 – $90,524 per year.
