Position: BUILDING AUTOMATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST
Position Summary
Bring your building automation and energy management expertise to this exciting role with our Facilities Maintenance team.

The Building Automation Systems Specialist (BASS) is responsible for optimizing and modernizing building automation system controls across Northern Health facilities to improve energy efficiency, support conservation initiatives, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The BASS works closely with Facilities Maintenance staff, facility operators, and DDC technicians to identify, implement, and document low cost/no cost operational improvements within existing systems, while supporting the commissioning of new and retrofitted systems to ensure reliable performance and alignment with design intent, operational requirements, and Northern Health’s energy management objectives.

Starting salary will be approximately from $76,111 to $95,138 and will be based on education, training, experience, and salaries of similar positions.

Qualifications

A minimum level of education equivalent to a BSc in engineering, automation, controls, instrumentation, building systems, or similar technical fields.

Ten (10) years of recent experience in building automation systems and energy management.

Experience with HVAC equipment, energy systems, and health systems.

Designation as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED Professional Accreditation, or similar, an asset.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Skills and Abilities

Experience in troubleshooting and debugging mechanical/HVAC and electrical/automation systems.

Ability to analyze complex control sequences and resulting operations, revise and implement as necessary to optimize building systems performance.

Ability to commission and program specific BAS systems.

Experience installing BAS systems.

Ability to diagnose and manage the repair and/or install a wide range of control, sensing and actuating devices.

Proven work experience and results with previous recommissioning projects of reasonable size and complexity.

A solid understanding of mechanical HVAC systems, equipment types, functions, and efficiencies.

Ability to perform building load, energy balance / estimating, and modeling methods would be an asset.

Familiar with ASHRAE / IES / CSA Standards including those unique to hospital design and local building codes.

Awareness of the special design and operating requirements for hospitals in Canada.

Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, sequence of operations, and equipment schedules.

Ability to review previous mechanical system and energy study reports of various levels of detail.

Strong understanding of energy and carbon calculations.

Enthusiasm about learning and comfortable working in a primarily online environment.

Ability to adapt to evolving project needs and work effectively in dynamic, collaborative environments.

Knowledge and understanding of common HVAC equipment is an asset.

Knowledge of building operations and energy efficiency practices (an asset).

Proficiency in using digital tools and platforms for communication and outreach.
