Job Summary
This position provides support to designated School of Trades and Technologies program area/s with primary responsibilities including inventory management, shop and compound safety inspections, maintenance and repair, ordering, purchasing, disposing and reconciliations. The incumbent is responsible for communicating and working in a collaborative manner with the program area instructors and direct supervisor, and college employees to ensure the School of Trades and Technologies continues to provide quality, timely, and reliable support for student success.
Specific Duties- Perform shop and compound inspections at the beginning and end of each day to identify and rectify issues, maintaining a safe working area in accordance with Work Safe BC, WHMIS and school requirements.
- Perform shop equipment safety inspections daily to ensure equipment is in good working order and document as per department or school procedure.
- Regularly manage inventory: receive and inspect products, verify condition, sort and stock; remove tools, equipment or consumables out of service and dispose of end‑of‑life products; update the college inventory management system. This includes program consumables, tools, equipment and safety products.
- Maintain a complete library of maintenance manuals, paper or digital, readily available for use.
- Provide support for the practical/shop component by communicating per School procedure, ensuring consumable needs for projects are available and stocked, preparing training aids and equipment, and managing specialized tools from the toolroom to avoid double bookings.
- Support the practical/shop component by requesting quotes, consulting budget approver, placing orders, purchasing and reconciling credit cards. This includes obtaining quotes, informing the budget approver of program needs, completing documentation of receipt of products, coding invoices, and supplying receipts to the School and Finance department in line with policies.
- Create work order requests using college software for maintenance of building/shop space where deficiencies are identified.
- Provide brief student supervisory support to instructors for safety purposes only.
- Maintain tools and equipment within certification qualifications; request quotes for repairs when beyond qualification.
- Provide First Aid as required.
- Attend departmental meetings to give input on workshop and departmental procedures.
- Liaise with other College departments.
- Contribute to the vision, mission, and goals of the College while supporting learners’ aspirations and needs.
- Promote a positive work atmosphere through professional communication and mutual respect with students and colleagues.
- Other related duties as assigned by Manager or designate.
- Completion of a 4‑year apprenticeship program in the applicable field.
- Red Seal Certification in the field of study.
- Five or more years of demonstrated experience in maintenance, repair and calibration within the trade, or equivalent education and industry experience.
- Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve to support program needs and departmental procedures.
- Inventory management experience an asset.
- Purchasing experience an asset.
- WHMIS training required.
- Ability to work independently, proactively identify needs and tasks, organize and coordinate multiple activities, and manage competing priorities.
- Level 2 First Aid Ticket required or to be obtained within six months.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Forklift certification required or to be obtained within six months.
- Communication and interpersonal skills suitable for effective interaction with College departments, faculty, staff, students, outside agencies, suppliers, etc.
- Physical ability to complete demands of the position.
