Detailed OverviewAs part of the New Graduate Nurse (RN/RPN) Program and reporting to the Manager, Health Services, the newly graduated Registered Nurse (RN)/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) provides nursing care to patients/clients consistent with current Standards of Professional Practice and the Nursing Philosophy of Fraser Health. The RN/RPN plans, organizes and implements nursing care for patients/clients receiving medical and surgical care.
Responsibilities- Provides direct nursing care to patients/clients based on nursing knowledge and in conformance with established standards and hospital policies by performing such duties as assessing patient care needs, identifying problems, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care. Modifies care as needs change, initiates immediate treatment if required and communicates changes to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Collaborates with physicians and other health care providers in planning and evaluating the care provided.
- Plans and provides teaching to patients/clients and their families by identifying health‑related learning needs, providing related teaching and/or referring to the appropriate resources (e.g. respiratory therapy, home care, cardiac rehab programs, diabetes education center etc.).
- Initiates discharge planning for patients/clients on admission, intervenes as appropriate and refers to other disciplines (e.g. social work).
- Communicates, participates and consults with members of the health care team about patient /client care and participates in multidisciplinary conferences.
- Participates in the collegial sharing of information among staff; identifies self‑learning needs and attends educational programs to maintain and enhance clinical competency.
- Participates in the orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff and students by providing information and acting as a preceptor, as appropriate.
- Participates in quality improvement activities by maintaining information relevant to the management of the assigned patient group, and providing input to the Patient Care Coordinator and/or Clinical Nurse Educator regarding the development of indicators, standards, practices, procedures; prepares reports as required; participates in related research activities by identifying patient care and/or work environment issues and collecting data.
- Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients/clients, visitors and staff by adhering to established hospital standards related to infection control, fire and other emergency practices and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Graduation in current year from a recognized program in Nursing.
Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
