Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Cardiac Care department at University Hospital of Northern BC.
In accordance with established vision and values of the organization, the Registered Nurse practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as well as within a patient and family centered care model.
The Registered Nurse practices in a variety of clinical settings and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of client care. Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse ensures the delivery of client–centered care by assisting individual clients and their families respond to changing health care needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates a specialized body of knowledge and bases practice on nursing science and related content from other sciences and humanities.
The scope of practice for a cardiovascular nurse requires specialty knowledge and skills. Such knowledge and skills enable the delivery of cardiovascular education, encourage primary prevention, assist in cardiovascular disease detection, and offer treatment to patients, families, communities, and populations (The Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses, 2023). The Northern Health Cardiac Education Program (NHCEP) supports cardiac care education and training in Northern Health for registered nurses.
The goal of the NHCEP is to improve cardiac care in Northern British Columbia by increasing nursing knowledge and skills to enable registered nurses to work in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC). The NCEP nursing education course is a 12-week paid specialty nursing course.
Course components include:
• The Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) Progressive Care Unit online modules developed from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
• In class presentations and discussions
• Simulation lab time
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Clinical days at Northern Health Cardiac Programs
• Practicum shifts at a regional cardiac site (Vancouver General Hospital or Kelowna General Hospital) with compensation provided for travel expenses.
Northern Health In-House Cardiac Care Training Program Details:
• There are 24 training positions available for 2025/2026
• Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
• Successful candidates may be required to complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
• Learners should expect to make a 4 – 6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning.
• Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program.
• Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
• Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
• Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
• Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.
