Position Summary

In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, and under the general supervision of Manager or designate, the Intake/Outreach Worker is responsible for providing harm reduction‑based supports, information, resources and supplies to clients who are actively using substances and other stigmatized populations. The I/O Worker will interact with service users, respond to overdoses, distribute harm and risk reduction materials, and provide information and referrals where required.

This position works independently and collaboratively with other team members to provide integrated, low‑barrier, trauma‑informed supports to individuals living with physical and mental health needs, substance use disorder(s), and/or facing structural barriers to care (e.g., poverty, homelessness, involvement in sex work).

Shift Rotation/Hours of work

Days, 08:00 to 19:12 (rotating)

Qualifications
  • Diploma in Social Services or related program (2 years) with completion of approved additions or substance use training or certificate program plus one‑year recent related experience working with individuals with substance use disorders; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current social issues related to substance use, homelessness, mental health, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships following harm reduction principles.
  • Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to solve problems and deal with conflict effectively.
  • Ability to use critical thinking and assess risks to intervene and de‑escalate critical incidents.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently, with indirect supervision, and in cooperation with others.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
