Environmental Educator

Prince Rupert, BC, Canada

About the Role

Spend your summer on the rugged North Coast. Imagine spending your summer steps from the ocean, caring for live marine invertebrates, leading hands‑on programs for curious kids, designing mini‑exhibits about local species, and perhaps spotting eagles and killer whales from the dock. The North Coast Ecology Centre Society is hiring up to two Environmental Educators for Summer 2026. This is more than a summer job;

it’s an opportunity to gain real‑world environmental education experience, build practical field skills, and help shape a growing community Ecology Centre on a coastline teeming with marine life.

What You’ll Actually Be Doing

As an Environmental Educator, you’ll be part of a small, passionate team bringing marine science to life. In addition to working at the Centre, in May and June you’ll support school programming and in July and August you will help with Eco Camp day camps and community programming. The NCECS is also leading a dockside biodiversity study and supporting a light trap study throughout summer months.

  • Open, operate, and close the Centre alongside staff and volunteers
  • Collect and provide exemplary care for live marine invertebrates
  • Develop and deliver interactive interpretive programs
  • Design creative displays and mini‑exhibits
  • Engage visitors through hands‑on environmental education
  • Support and mentor volunteers
  • Assist with school programs and Eco Camp day camps
  • Conduct visitor surveys and gather feedback
  • Support communications, social media, and reporting
  • Collaborate with partners and board members
  • Contribute ideas to help grow and strengthen the Centre

Requirements / Desired Qualifications
  • Passionate about environmental education and conservation
  • Comfortable speaking to groups and engaging the public
  • A strong communicator, both written and verbal
  • Knowledgeable about North Coast ecology, especially marine systems
  • Able to work independently and as part of a small team
  • Creative and comfortable with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok
  • Organized and detail‑oriented
Assets
  • Knowledge of Ts’msyen history, culture, or Sm’algyax language
  • Animal care experience
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle (mileage compensated)
Eligibility
  • Be 15 to 30 years old at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person
  • Have a valid SIN and be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • A criminal record check may be required.

The NCECS is a registered charity working toward the creation of a permanent ecology education centre in Prince Rupert, BC. Our mission is to inspire awe, respect, and stewardship for the North Coast’s rich terrestrial and marine environments. Local candidates will be prioritized.
